  3. I leave in 3 weeks for Hebei University on a teaching assignment. I am a Washington State native. Your site’s icon appeared quite serendipitously an I believe was an integrel part of my positive decision to come and teach in China. You never can really know how you may effect the lives of others and in which ways. Food for thought on a difficult fast. Good Luck. Last year I gave up cable and other than a few movies checked out at a local library, I exclusively watch pbs. Now I can’t watch commercial TV.

  4. Matt, I found your site looking for plans using Inside Out. I enjoyed reading your story. I am in Nanning teaching since 2006. The South is very different then the North. Laid back, great students. Good teachers. Nice apartments. You have a wonderful way with writing. I look forward to reading the months ahead. Thank you for having this site. Mike

  8. Hi Matt,

I’ve been following your blog for some time. I also live in Toronto and have been to China a couple of times. Once for business and once for vacation (and just loved it.) I’m considering a one year stay in China to learn mandarin. (I’m just completing a basic conversational mandarin course.)

Are you going back to teach or is it just to visit?

    Dan.

  10. Hello Matt,
Great site! Very cool of you to take time to really tell people what to expect in coming to China. As we know, it’s quite different than anywhere else! I’ve put together a company to also assist teachers looking to China for the first time or find a great job while they’re here. http://www.TeachingNomad.com is great place to start for anyone looking to teach abroad. Similar to your blog, we are all foreigners living here in China and really want to help others have a great experience.

    take care!
    Brett
